Krafto xALPHA
DIY VA Synth based on the Pi Pico 2 Board
Project Details:
-
Started as a "clone" of the Alpha Juno 2, but is now expanded with extra features: 97 Wavetables, 551 PCM Samples, DW8000 and Virus Waveforms, Delay Effect, Retro Glider Effect, Mono Mode with Auto Glide. and more.
-
Near Zero Latency, No OS, no Linux, just bare metal coding. Usually < 1ms latency
-
Complete set of source files if you want to change anything; otherwise, use the pre-compiled binary files instead. Programming the Pico 2 is easy, just hold the Boot button while plugging the USB-C cable into a computer. It shows the boot folder, drag-and-drop the binary file, and it's done.
- Cheap to build yourself, just two Pico 2 boards, two DACs, and two SD Cards
- For the interface: Two I2C 16x2 LCDs, 3 Encoders, 3 Buttons, and 3 Knobs
- You can customize the parameters that the 3 Knobs will handle
- Regular MIDI Input
- No PCB required
- Check the BOM (Bill of Materials) List on the right, to see all it takes to create your own version. There's also a video at the bottom of this page
- STL Case Files for your 3D Printer
- Option to get Arduino IDE ready source files to make your own changes, or use the ready binaries

Synth Engine:
-
7 Voices
-
3 OSCs: one Saw/Pulse with PWM LFO, one multi Saw/Pulse OSC (multi waveform), and one Sub OSC with multiple waveforms to select. OSCs are over-sampled but anti-aliasing sound.
-
OSC 1 and 2 now have the DW8000 and Virus waveforms (plus the Alpha Juno 2 waveforms)
-
Noise generator with tune option, as noise is a long sample sound
-
PCM Samples with a 551 selection of sounds
- New Multi-Mode Filter: Low 12 to 36db, Band and High Pass 12 and 24db, plus Peak 12 and 24db
- Two envelopes: AMP and Pitch/Filter Env2
- 3 LFOs: PWM, Pitch, and Filter With Sync to BPM Option
- Chord Maker (3 selectable notes per voice with fine tune)
- Analog Drift options
- MIDI Learn for every parameter
- Master Volume and MIDI Channel (Omni ~ Ch 16)
- Stereo Chorus
- Delay with Feedback Filter, and sync to BPM option
- Be sure to request new features, as I'm always improving the engine. Also, the engine can be switched to other projects that I will be working on. Allowing different synths to use the same hardware
